Have you ever known a kid (Or perhaps you were this kid!) who would wait until the adult's back was turned before sneaking into something? Once caught, this child was as contrite as could be-until opportunity presents itself again!
"Whenever the Lord raised up judges for them, the Lord was with the judge, and he saved them from the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge. For the Lord was moved to pity by their groaning because of those who afflicted and oppressed them. But whenever the judge died, they turned back and were more corrupt than their fathers, going after other gods, serving them and bowing down to them. They did not drop any of their practices or their stubborn ways." Judges 2:18-19
Perhaps the worst thing about how the people were living isn't that they were waiting for their judges to die before chasing after false gods, but that they consistently took advantage of God's mercy. Then without another thought for all He had done for them, they turned their backs on Him.
How does the adult feel when the child keeps waiting until their back is turned, and then running into mischief?
God has pity, mercy, grace, and pure love. Carelessly throwing that into the wind, is heinous. The fact that God could still love and forgive us is nothing short of miraculous. I pray that we don't live our lives, grieving the God Who loves us.
