A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another. John 13:34-35
According to the Strong's Concordance the word disciple here means; a learner, i.e. pupil and it comes from a root word that means; to learn (in any way). Jesus spoke these words in the upper room just after Judas, one of his disciples had left the room to go and betray Him. Jesus knew that and still He spoke these words to the remaining disciples as He was preparing them for what came next.
He said that all will know. All will recognize that we have been His pupil and that we belong to Him if we will have learned what it is His heart to teach us, that we LOVE ONE ANOTHER. He used the words. "love one another" three times. It was important to Him that they, that we, understand that loving, caring for one another was an important part of what He was imparting to them because everything He had done so far and what He was about to do was all about His love for them, for us.
Loving one another stuff is important because it means we have learned by His example! We have truly been pupils that have been taught by the Master. Sometimes I think we are so busy being Priests and Levites that we forget to be Samaritains and to stop long enough to be moved by compassion. Jesus asked the question, "So which of these three do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the theives?" And he said, "He who showed mercy on him." Then Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise." Luke 10:36-37
"As I have loved you, that you also love and another."
