Today I would like to take a look at the response of two
brothers had to a request that their father made.
"But what do you think? A man had two sons, and he came to the first and said, 'Son, go, work today in my vineyard.'
He answered and said, 'I will not,' but afterward he regretted it and went.
Then he came to the second and said likewise. And he answered and said, 'I go, sir,' but he did not go.
Which of the two did the will of his father?" They said to Him, "The
first." Jesus said to them, "Assuredly, I say to you that tax collectors
and harlots enter the kingdom of God before you. For John came to you
in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him; but tax
collectors and harlots believed him; and when you saw it, you did not
afterward relent and believe him." Matthew
21:28-32
Jesus asked
the pharisees which son did the will of his father, the one who said,
"No," but did what was asked or the one who said, "Yes," but didn't. So
what do you think? If you answered, "The first," like the pharisees you
would be correct as well. The first son, even though he started out
refusing to do his father's will changed his mind and made the choice to
... obey.
Today we are talking about the choices we make and as you can see in this parable it is easy to recognize that
its not just about the choice you say you make but what you do that matters most. The truth is that we all at various times in our
life can relate to both theses sons. But as believers we need to try to
be willing and obedient to the Father's will. It is our job to hear Him
and to obey His word in our lives.
Jesus set the best
example possible! He not only heard the Father but always did what the
Father said. The truth is it is always about choice. We will always have
to choose the same way these two sons did. Will we do the work of the
Father or not? Will we like Jesus say, "Not my will but thy will be
done." Do we as sons and daughters of the Most High God really mean it
when we pray and say, "Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven."
The point of today's message is simply a reminder that you and I like these two
sons make our own choice and our choice is made with more than with just our
words but our actions as well. Remember '...whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." 1 Corinthians 10:31 We should also remember that our choice
needs to be made with this in mind - Obedience to the Father's will is
important!
